As part of our outreach programme in Yilo Krobo we visited Sikabeng community on 18th October 2024 at 7; 30am. Sikabeng community is about 20 kilometers from Somanya. The Community has a School, Churches and is farming community. Most of the people who live in this community are mostly farmers in cassava, plantain, cocoyam, and maize. In attendance were: Otiko Afisah Djaba – Executive Director, Henry Djaba Memorial Foundation, Naa Fua – District Officer, Department of Social Welfare and Community Development and James Sambian – M&E Officer and Programs Manager, Henry Djaba Memorial Foundation. Participants from the community were forty four in number.
Objective
The purpose of the outreach program was to first and foremost introduce the Foundation to the community and learn from first hand their concerns and interest as well as the interventions that would best support vulnerable young girls, women and persons with disability in the community. The second purpose was to observe and select volunteers from the group to serve as HDMF movers and shakers in the community and liaise between HDMF and the community. The third purpose was to encourage and energize the community to provide material and in-kind support to HDMF whenever the need arises.
Key Issues:
The main problem in the community is the high rate of school dropout and unemployment among the youth who have completed either JSS or SHS.
