Introduction
As part of our outreach programme in Yilo Krobo we visited Obawale community on 29th January 2024 at 11; 30am. Obawale community is about 20 kilometers from Somanya and is situated off the Sikabeng and Koforidua main road. The Community has a School, Churches, Health Centre, and a Police Barrier. It is predominantly a farming community. The main crops are maize, cassava, plantain, cocoyam and palm nuts. In attendance were: Otiko Afisah Djaba – Executive Director, Henry Djaba Memorial Foundation and James Sambian – M&E Officer and Programs Manager, Henry Djaba Memorial Foundation. Participants from the community were twenty six (26) in number consisting of farmers, traders, Students, Opinion Leaders and Assemblymen
Objective
The purpose of the outreach program was to introduce the Foundation to the community and learn from first hand their concerns and interest as well as the interventions that would best support the development of vulnerable young girls, women and persons with disability in the community. The second purpose was to observe and select volunteers from the group to serve as HDMF facilitators (movers and shakers) in the community and liaise between HDMF and the community. The third purpose was to energize the community to buy into the mission of HDMF and encourage them to provide material and in-kind support for vulnerable persons in the community.
Key Issues:
The main issues and challenges raised by the participants included the following:
Lack of potable water. High Unemployment. Poor Road network. Out of 5 boreholes only one is working. | No refuse dump. Dilapidated School Building. Lack of Equipment for the community clinic. | No school feeding program. No public toilet. 60% of residents have toilets in their homes. |
