Introduction

As part of our outreach programme in Yilo Krobo we visited Klo Agogo community on 12th February 2025 at11:00am. Klo Agogo is one of the 48 communities in of the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly. The community is about 80 kilometers drive from Somanya and about 7 Kilometers from Boti Falls – a well-known tourist attraction in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region of Ghana. Klo Agogo is a bustling town with a Secondary School, two Banks and a Hotel. Unfortunately, Klo Agogo has a dilapidated market and no Police Station. The community is predominantly a farming community. The main crops are maize, cassava, plantain, cocoyam and palm nuts. In attendance were: Otiko Afisah Djaba – Executive Director, Henry Djaba Memorial Foundation and James Sambian – M&E Officer and Programs Manager, Henry Djaba Memorial Foundation. Participants from the community were 73 in number consisting of farmers, traders, hairdressers, dress makers, food sellers, students, opinion leaders and assemblymen.

Objective

The purpose of the outreach program was to introduce the Foundation to the community and learn from first hand their concerns and interest as well as the interventions that would best support the development of  vulnerable young girls, women and persons with disability in the community. The second purpose was to observe and select volunteers from the group to serve as HDMF facilitators (movers and shakers) in the community to serve as liaison between HDMF and the community. The third purpose was to energize the community to buy into the mission of HDMF and encourage them to provide material and in-kind support to vulnerable persons in the community.

Key Issues:

The main issues and challenges raised by the participants included the following:

Lack of good drinking water. High Unemployment. Poor Road network.  Poor Clinic with no equipment. No ambulance in spite of the fact that the nearest Hospital is Koforidua, about 30 kilometers away.  Dilapidated Market.
