In the heart of Somanya, Sra in Yilo Krobo,in Ghana, The Henry Djaba Memorial Center for Ideas and Knowledge established in 2020 has become a beacon of hope and empowerment that provides entrepreneurial opportunities for persons with disabilities and vulnerable girls and women. Through targeted education and livelihood skills development, the Henry Djaba Memorial Foundation is determined to enhance the economic independence of marginalised individuals, enabling them to participate meaningfully in Ghana’s growing economy.

This Livelihood Skills Training and Empowerment Center is a haven where individuals can discover their potential, develop their socio-economic skills, break barriers to unlock their future.  Indeed, the Center is empowering the lives of vulnerable young girls, women and girls with disability through a practical hands-on livelihood entrepreneurial skills training and empowerment program.  It provides individuals the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities, creating sustainable income streams and boosting local economies. It also fosters entrepreneurship and innovation within the disability and gender equity space, creating opportunities for trainees to sell their goods locally and internationally.

The goal is to empower girls, women and girls with disability, emancipate and transform lives.  The Livelihood Skills Training and Empowerment Center has already made a significant impact in the lives of many persons with disabilities and vulnerable girls in Somanya. The center’s mission is to empower these individuals with the skills and confidence they need to break free from the cycle of poverty and dependence.  The vision is to provide hands-on vocational and technical skills and equipment for over 400 individuals with the practical tools necessary to gain employment, start their own businesses, or pursue further education.

As a disability friendly and inclusive space for growth this center provides a safe and nurturing environment where persons with disabilities and vulnerable girls and women can come together to learn, share, and improve their well-being.
The Center offers a range of livelihood skills training programs to create women entrepreneurs through:
– Vocational Training: Skills training in areas such as fashion design, tailoring, beadwork with jewelry, bags, slippers, and craft, bead accessories, bag making, liquid soap and detergent production, hairdressing, makeup, pedicure and manicure

– Entrepreneurship: Training in entrepreneurship and basic business management to equip individuals with the skills to start and run their own enterprises.

-Training in essential life skills, such as financial and digital literacy, communication, and problem-solving.

-Leadership skills

The Center’s holistic approach has enabled individuals to:
– Develop and gain confidence as well as self-esteem, enabling them to participate more effectively and meaningfully in their communities.
– Acquire valuable skills that can be used to secure employment or start their own businesses.
– Build networks, partnerships, collaborations, and connections with others, reducing isolation and increasing opportunities for wealth creation and self-sufficiency.

The Henry Djaba Memorial Center for Ideas and Knowledge (HDMCIK) is a shining example of what can be achieved when individuals come together to support a common cause. As the Center continues to grow and expand its services, it is poised to make an even greater impact in the lives of persons with disabilities and vulnerable girls and women in Somanya and beyond.   The impact of this initiative extends beyond the individual trainees, as it contributes to shifting societal attitudes towards disability, gender inequality and injustices and proving that with the right support and opportunities, people from all backgrounds can achieve greatness.
