NAOMI’S SEWING DREAM

In the heart of Yilo Krobo, at Klo Agogo in the Eastern Region of Ghana,  resides a vulnerable woman named Naomi Tetteh.  Naomi’s 33 years have been a life marked by challenges, from poverty to limited access to education and economic opportunities. Despite these obstacles, Naomi’s determination and resilience have shone through to enable her to break the barriers and realize her dream as a fashion designer. With only her Wrapong Junior High School qualification, she started out selling waakye as an assistant cook at Ashiaman.   She became pregnant and has to take care of her two daughters alone as a single parent with her meagre earnings.  Living was tough and painful, but none of her struggles held her back from pursuing her dream.  In 2012, she returned to Kojonya in Somanya and enrolled for a 3-year course at Big Joe Fashion Design.   After several years of hard work and determination, Naomi made some savings and rented a kiosk in November 2024, and began actualizing her dream with two new apprentices.  She was fortunate to be patronized by clients, especially during festive occasions, outdooring’s, funerals, weddings, and festivals.   However,  her sewing machine got spoiled and she resorted to renting a sewing machine at GHC60.00 per month.  Heartbroken and desperate, Naomi said she prayed and God listened to her cries when she attended an outreach program at Klo Agog,o organized by the Henry Djaba Memorial Foundation. The ED recognized her potential and decided to support her. We donated a brand-new electric sewing machine to Naomi, providing her with the tool to continue her new business without rental worries. With the sewing machine, Naomi creates clothes and other textile products, generating income and improving her livelihood.

Naomi is a testimony to the Dalai Lama’s statement – “Determination with an optimistic attitude is the key to success”.   The impact of the sewing machine was profound. Naomi’s newfound skills and economic independence empowered her to support herself and her children. She has become a role model in her community, inspiring other women to pursue their passions and develop their skills.  Naomi’s story highlights the importance of supporting vulnerable girls and women in Yilo Krobo. By providing access to resources and opportunities, the Henry Djaba Memorial Foundation can help break down barriers and empower young girls and women to reach their full potential.

Today, thanks to the Henry Djaba Memorial Foundation, Naomi’s dream is alive and her business is thriving.  She creates beautiful textile products for her customers.  Naomi’s success is a testament to the power of support and empowerment.
