When girls are given the right tools to succeed, they can create incredible futures, not only for themselves but also for those around them.” The Henry Djaba Memorial Foundation has developed The Girls Leadership Development Initiative (GLIDE) as a girls’ leadership skills development vehicle. This initiative strives to empower young girls, women, and women with disability with leadership skills, digital knowledge expertise, and confidence that will nurture and build the capacity of female leaders to increase their representation in decision-making and leadership positions, as well as enable them to drive and lead community development and governance.

The goal is to mentor and provide young girls and women, as well as those with disabilities, with opportunities to promote gender equality, equity, inclusivity, increased representation, and sustainable development.
We aim to develop future female leaders by identifying and nurturing them to drive positive change in Ghana, to empower girls and young women with leadership skills, confidence, and knowledge to become change-agents and makers in their communities, and to promote inclusivity by fostering an inclusive environment that supports them from diverse backgrounds and abilities to thrive in leadership roles.

The Key GLIDE Components include
– Leadership Training, which provides training on leadership principles, communication, networking, collaborations, governance, conflict resolution, and goal setting.
– Mentorship: Pairing girls with experienced mentors who can offer guidance and support.
- A Girls Leadership Forum on women breaking down the barriers and reaching for the glass ceiling
- Community Engagement that encourages girls to participate in community service, community decision-making roles, and development projects.
- Education and Skills Development that offer education and skills training in areas such as digital literacy, entrepreneurship, and STEM.

The benefits of GLIDE include increased development of girls confidence and self-esteem, enabling them to take on leadership roles; in this regard 20 young girls, women and persons with disability won as assembly members in 2019, improved girls acquisition of essential skills in leadership, communication, entrepreneurial and problem-solving with 57 small scale entrepreneurs; girls becoming agents of change through HDMF’s Girls Talk radio program, driving positive impact in their communities and girls becoming female role models, challenging traditional gender stereotypes.

By implementing this Girls Leadership Development Initiative, Ghana can empower young girls to become leaders, elected representatives, and change-makers, driving positive impact in their communities and promoting sustainable development. Be a part of shaping Ghana’s brighter future with girls’ and women’s leadership.
