Not having access to clean water in the 21st century seems out of place. Imagine this nightmare in the heart of Ghana’s Eastern Region, where some people in Yilo Krobo are still struggling to access one of life’s most necessary resources: clean water. The reality for too many residents is the daily quest for water, which is a gruelling task that consumes hours with yellow water gallons, leaving them exhausted and vulnerable. Women and children, especially girls, often travel miles, trekking long distances to scrounge for water from muddy, unreliable sources for daily water collection, sacrificing time that could be spent on education, work, or family. The toll on meagre earnings from buying water daily from Pragya suppliers is a recipe for insufficient water for the families and unhygienic living conditions.
The lack of access to clean water puts these communities at risk of waterborne diseases, perpetuating a cycle of poverty and poor health. The people face daily economic hardships because, without reliable access to water, economic opportunities are limited, and the communities are trapped in a cycle of poverty, thus the cry for help. The provision of clean water will help to reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases, improve overall health outcomes, and empower education. Through your support, we will be able to enable communities to thrive by providing access to clean water for daily life, increasing hygienic practices, agriculture, and economic activities.

Furthermore, education will be enhanced with free time for children, in particular girls, to attend school and focus on their education, rather than spending hours fetching water.

During our outreach engagements, the Henry Djaba Memorial Foundation identified with community members the lack of access to clean water as the main priority for 5 communities in Yilo Krobo. We take it for granted that everyone has access to clean water to drink, cook, wash, and clean. However, the potential of these communities is hindered by the critical challenge of a lack of access to clean and reliable sources of water. It will be a dream come through, an answer to years of prayer to bring clean water to their doorsteps.

Previous efforts have been made by Water Aid Ghana and GWCL, but the municipality still faces water supply disruptions. Somanya residents only have one supply of water per week, and the recent crisis caused by construction works on the Somanya-Odumase-Kpong road has affected communities like Sawer. The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has intervened, directing Ghana Water Limited (GWL) to resolve the issue, but to date, it is unresolved. To address this issue and improve water services delivery in rural communities, the Henry Djaba Memorial Foundation, an NGO committed to transforming lives through sustainable solutions, is working with these communities to fulfil their major priority of access to clean water.

The mission of the Henry Djaba Memorial Foundation is to work together with the communities to change this narrative by supporting community water projects in Yilo Krobo. We believe that every individual deserves access to clean, reliable water. Our goal is to empower these communities to provide sustainable water solutions that will improve health, boost economic opportunities, and enhance the overall quality of life of residents.

We are currently working on five community water projects in Yilo Krobo, each designed to address the unique needs of the communities we serve. These projects include:
1. Drilling, pump, piping, and installation of New Boreholes and Wells to provide access to clean, underground water sources. (Manual, mechanized or solar-powered)
2. Rainwater Harvesting: Collecting and storing rainwater for community use.
3. Local Water Distribution Systems with the building of alternative infrastructure to bring water directly to homes and public spaces.
4. Water Purification Systems that implement technologies to purify contaminated water sources.
5. Community Education to educate communities on water conservation, hygiene, and sanitation practices.
